So does anyone know if the horrible 1970's tube that is now the The Wishing Well in Wannock Gardens in Eastbourne was ever a Holy Well [by which I mean an old Well with a pre tube structure and tradition rather than debating what a holy Well is here], or is the title and the tradition of holding hands across the well to make a wish some faux traditional modern ceremony.

I guess you are referring to the goings on in this picture, right?

Shame there is no date given for that photo, though it might well date to the 70s.

Will look through the local history section for Sussex when I get a chance and see what I can find. Will also contact Mr Fagan and ask him. Watch this space for further information/responses.

I have seen these tube wells in many a seaside amusement park, garden centre, pub garden etc - I guess we all have - and it is probably the case that it was constructed especially for this purpose. It is very probably true that EVERY model village has a wishing well - just something that goes with the territory. We might never know as the above piece on this site says that the gardens are closed, and that the site has been 'developed', which sounds ominous.

Still, I agree that this is worth a closer look.
