I noticed recently that the PAS funding is/might/will be reduced in the coming years. The PAS is the portable Antiquities Scheme by which archaeological finds can be reported to a single organisation where they can be recorded for research. there are a number of views on this program. Some archaeologists think it validates cultural theft by giving a sheen of respectability to metal detecting by providing the means for the semi legalisation of dubiously acquired material in return for pointlessly generic finds information. Others argue that it is an important program that brings to the attention of the archaeological community material that would otherwise dissapear for ever with no record of it ever having been found. Im not saying which position I come down on, but I would be interested to hear anyone elses view.
